The Troup County Board of Commissioners approved an amendment to the School Resource Officers (SRO) contract on Tuesday to allow four additional deputies in elementary schools.

As part of its plan to place SROs in all schools, the Troup County School System requested four additional deputies from the sheriff’s office to serve in elementary schools in the unincorporated area of the county.

The additional officers will be added to Rosemont, Hillcrest, Long Cane and Callaway Elementary.

The school system will pay the costs for the officers at a rate of $58,418 per officer, up from $56,274.

Major Keith Flory said that they currently do not have enough deputies to immediately fill the positions but they will start with Rosemont.

“We’re going to go ahead and try to get one officer in Rosemont Elementary School and then as the sheriff and I look at we’re going to try to fill these positions as we can,” Flory said.

Flory said for Callaway Elementary, nearby Callaway Middle School already has an SRO and helps out when needed.
