On Tuesday afternoon, a student reported to the school administration at Callaway High School that students were observed handling a weapon in a vehicle in the student parking lot.
According to a press release from the Troup County School System, administrators and the school resource officer began investigating immediately.
The vehicle was quickly located and searched, and the weapon, which was found in plain sight, was safely confiscated, TCSS said. The weapon was determined to be an airsoft BB gun. The owner of the vehicle, along with the other students involved, were identified and questioned.
During the investigation, TCSS determined that the weapon never entered the building, and there was no direct threat to student or staff safety. The school district said law enforcement has been notified, and normal disciplinary procedures are being followed.
Principal Jason Graham notified parents and students of the incident by SendIt, the notification system used by the school system.
“Student and staff safety is always our top priority,” the TCSS press release said. “We’re extremely thankful for the student who reported the concern and the quick and efficient response by the school administration and our school resource officer.”
