LaGrange volleyball is building some momentum. After a tough season last year as the team transitioned to a new coach, the Grangers have gotten off to a much better start this season.
“The team is really growing and learning one game at a time right now,” LaGrange coach Alma Barrientos said. “We have a lot of fight this season. We have had to come from down both time to beat Hardaway.”
After falling to St. Anne-Pacelli to start their season last Tuesday, the Grangers have rattled off three wins in a row starting with a victory over Hardaway last week. The team dispatched the Hawks again on Tuesday as well as vanquishing cross-county rivals Callaway to extend their winning streak to three.
“We have worked the whole summer for this,” Barrientos said. “Coach (Tyler) Eady has really been working on our conditioning and making sure we can play all these games.”
The Grangers’ victory against Hardaway last week came on the road, but the two wins on Tuesday came in front of a home crowd.
LaGrange has a good mix of youth and experience as the team looks to build on Barrientos’ first season in charge last year.
“I think it is about their maturity now,” Barrientos said. “A lot of these girls were 10th and 9th graders last year and now they are 11th and 10th graders. They see the game with different eyes now.”
The team is in a good spot right now, having won three matches in a row for the first time under their second-year head coach.
“I don’t even know the last time we won two in a row,” Barrientos said with a chuckle.
There will be no rest for the Grangers, who will travel to Spalding on Thursday before taking part in a tournament on Saturday at Rockmart.
“We will be playing some schools that we have never played before, so we don’t know what to expect, but we figure it will be tough,” Barrientos said. “It is going to be tough, but my girls are all about it.”
