A LaGrange teen was killed in a fatal collision with an 18-wheeler overnight.

Romelius Fannin, 18, was killed while driving a moped on Interstate 85 around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Troup County Coroner Erin Hackley confirmed that the victim was declared deceased at the scene of the crash.

According to a preliminary investigation from the Georgia State Patrol, the victim had been traveling on a Jiajue Moped southbound on I-85 near Mile Marker 22 when the moped was struck by a Volvo tractor-trailer truck.

GSP said the moped was being operated illegally in the right southbound lane of I-85 and being followed by the truck when the collision occurred. Both vehicles came to an uncontrolled rest in the right lane.

Hackley said the victim had been leaving work from Hogansville.

Mopeds like the victim had been operating are not allowed on the interstate because they are incapable of reaching highway speeds.
