Thursday provided sweet relief for Callaway.

The Cavaliers softball team won its first game of the season in its home opener and first region game of the year, beating Landmark Christian 10-2.

It took a little while for the offenses to get going with Callaway taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second to break the deadlock.

Ava Shuford scored on a steal from home and it was just the start of what would be a big day for her.

The Cavaliers offense truly started to get going in the third inning. Madison Kemp opened the scoring with a one-run single.

Savannah Rice doubled to bring home two more runs in the inning. Shuford brought home one run with a double before eventually scoring her second run of the game when Karlie Walker hit a single to drive her home.

It looked like Landmark might get back in the game when the team scored two runs in the top of the fourth, but eventually the Cavaliers were able to put them away with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Walker got the scoring going when she doubled to clear the bases and give the Cavaliers an 8-2 lead. Walker was immense at the plate, going 3-for-3 with four RBIs.

Bella Cleveland and Mckinley Milner each hit one-run singles to round out the scoring in the game.

Shuford also had a big offensive showing, going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Kemp and Milner had two hits each while Cleveland, Rice and Mikayla Blankenship all had a hit apiece.

Kaitlyn Williams had a strong showing on the mound, pitching all five innings while only allowing three hits.

Callaway (1-2) will play at Mt. Zion next Tuesday.
