Callaway got back to winning ways on Thursday, trouncing Mt. Zion 13-5 on the road.

After a scoreless opening inning, the Cavaliers captured the lead in the top of the second when Kylah Harris hit a one-run double and Keira Trone scored on an error to give Callaway a 2-0 lead.

Harris returned for her first varsity action since a major knee injury last fall last time out against Lamar County, getting her first hit in the second game of that doubleheader.

Harris broke out by going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored against Mt. Zion.

Callaway padded its lead in the top of the third when Karlie Walker hit a one-run single.

Mt. Zion came storming back and tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Cavaliers were undeterred and quickly retook the lead in the top of the fifth .Ava Shuford lined out to bring the first run home in the inning before Walker drove in her second run of the game with a single.

Walker had a monster game from the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

Callaway essentially killed the game off in the sixth inning, scoring six runs to take an 11-3 lead.

The team’s traded a pair of runs each from there, but there was no way back into the game for Mt. Zion.

Freshman Bella Cleveland got her first varsity start on the mound and put forth a solid showcase in her debut, pitching four innings while allowing six hits on two strikeouts.

She also aided her cause from the plate, going 1-for-3.

She made way for Kinley Smith for the final three innings. Smith dominated on the mound, allowing just three hits and no earned runs to slam the door on Mt. Zion.

Kaitlyn Williams had an outstanding day from the plate, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs.

Madison Kemp and Shuford had two hits each while Smith, Jackie Pitts and Mikayla Blankenship all had a hit apiece.

Callaway (2-4) will have a big region clash on the road to McNair next Tuesday.
