Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The Callaway softball needed a bounce back performance on Monday and they got just that courtesy of a strong showing on the mound for Mackenzie Toney and some timely hits to beat Bowdon 9-4.

The Cavaliers avenged a loss to Bowdon from a month ago, where the team took a tough 11-0 loss on the road. Monday was perfectly poised for the team to show progress and maturity and the Cavaliers delivered that in spades.

Callaway used some early offense to put a stranglehold on the game. The Cavaliers scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning after going three up, three down in the top of the inning.

An error allowed Kaitlyn Williams to score and the Cavaliers were off and running from there. Kinley Smith grounded out and drove in the second run. Keira Trone scored on a steal of home to make it 3-0 Callaway.

Toney worked around a leadoff single to get the Cavaliers out of the top of the second unscathed, which allowed the team to add to their lead in the bottom of the inning.

Ava Shuford came through with the bases loaded, driving in two on a powerfully hit double to center field.

Williams and Shuford each scored on two separate passed balls to make it 7-0 Cavaliers.

Callaway added to its lead when Madison Kemp scored on a passed ball and Kinley smith hit a one-run single in the bottom of the fourth.

The Red Devils eventually got to Toney late, scoring three earned runs off her in the sixth and seventh inning, but it was too little too late.

Toney commanded the mound, pitching a complete game and striking out nine batters while only allowing seven hits.

After falling to county rivals Troup last time out, the Cavaliers bounced back in a big way and have now won three of their last four games. Callaway (4-5) (2-0) will have an important region game at home on Tuesday against Eagle’s Landing.
