A West Point family is asking for help in rebuilding their home after the devastating tornadoes that went through Troup County in late March.

Stephanie Houston is asking for help from the community to finish repairs on the home of her inlaws that was demolished during the EF-3 tornado on March 26.

In seconds, the lives of Eddie and Winnie Houston were changed forever when the tornado completely destroyed their home without warning. Stephanie said the couple had some insurance on the home, about $28,000 worth, but that doesn’t go very far in rebuilding a house in 2023 and their reconstruction funds have basically run out.

The home was reduced to rubble during the tornado and the couple has been living with Stephanie since. Stephanie said they were devastated by the storm.

“It was very upsetting. Anytime it gets cloudy or anything, they both start freaking out,” Stephanie said. “Their whole house was destroyed to the foundation. Nothing was left. It was just a big pile of debris.

Stephanie said since then the community has stepped in and helped with providing labor and some materials but they still have a ways to go. She said her brother-in-law is helping rebuild the home but there is only so much he can do and they cannot afford to pay anyone.

“This journey has been hard for them but very humbling as the community has come together to help,” Stephanie said.

Stephanie said ETI in LaGrange donated the electrical work to the couple and some of the flooring was donated. She said the biggest need now is help with the plumbing and air conditioning. The couple also needs to replace cabinets and interior doors.

Community members have helped support the rebuild through fundraisers, but Stephanie said they are not looking for money.

“We don’t want to touch hands with money at all. Just any [materials] that can be donated would be appreciated,” Stephanie said. “If anyone would purchase what it is needed and have it delivered or we can go pick it up.”

Stephanie said anything at all would help as they are now left without a place to call their own, struggling to rebuild their lives from scratch.

Family member Jennifer Hull said they are hoping to complete the house enough so that they can move back by Christmas.

Stephanie said that any contribution would be greatly appreciated, no matter how big or small.
