The “Woman in Black” promises to be a hauntingly good mystery this weekend for guests at the Lafayette Society for Performing Arts’ Black Box Theater.

Presented by LSPA and Pat Briggs, and featuring members of Lafayette Theatre Company, “The Woman in Black” is a classic ghost story with gothic horror elements; this spine-tingler is guaranteed to put you in the Halloween mood. With a small cast, minimal set, and few props, Director Savanna Hunt, combines the use of sound design and special effects to usher in a gloomy ambiance.

Based on the novel by Susan Hill and adapted by Stephen Malatratt, “The Woman in Black” sees an older Arthur Kipps retelling a ghost story from his youth with the help of a young actor, seeking to dramatize his experience. Years back, Kipps traveled to the Eel Marsh House to sort through the papers of a recently deceased Mrs. Drablow. Staying at her home, Arthur begins to hear terrible screams and sees a mysterious woman in black around the town and house.

Hunt delivers a hauntingly good production that will have the audience on the edge of their seats.

“’The Woman in Black’ is a story that captivated me from the very beginning,” Hunt said in a LSPA press release. “Upon reading the script, I was immediately drawn to the intricacies of the plot and the unique way it unfolds before our eyes. It challenges both the performers and the audience to delve into the depths of fear, suspense, and mystery”.

The “Woman in Black” will haunt LSPA’s Black Box Theatre in downtown LaGrange from October 19-22. Showtimes are at 7:30 p.m. with the Oct. 22 show taking place at 3 p.m.

Playgoers are encouraged to don Halloween costumes to showings of “The Woman in Black” for a chance to win “frighteningly good” prizes.
