Lafayette Christian could get precious little going in its de facto region championship game with reigning state champions Sherwood on Friday, coming out on the wrong end of a 60-42 loss.

It could not have started worse for the Cougars as Sherwood took the opening kickoff back for six, adding a two-point conversion and doubled their lead to 16-0 just minutes later.

The Eagles proceeded to take a 24-0 lead before the halfway point in the first quarter.

The Cougars did not get on the board until David Karvelas found the end zone on a 3-yard run late in the first half. Karvelas found Connor Hudson on a touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 30-16 with 8:39 left in the third quarter, but that would be the closest the Cougars would come to getting back into the game.

Sherwood scored on a touchdown pass just a few minutes later to make it a three-score game once again. A 64-yard touchdown run by Ephraim Snyder cut the deficit to just two scores once again, but it was not enough.

The teams traded touchdowns once again with Karvelas scoring on an 11-yard touchdown run to make it 46-30 early in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles added another touchdown late in between two touchdown runs from Karvelas.

LCS finishes the regular season 7-2 overall and will head into the playoffs looking to make another deep run like last season’s trip to the GAPPS state semifinals.
