A handgun with ammunition was found with a gym bag at Troup High School on Monday, according to a press release from the Troup County School System.

The gym bag belonged to a 17-year-old student and an investigation is currently underway by law enforcement and the THS administration.

“We would like to thank our administrators, staff and law enforcement for addressing this situation as thoroughly and responsibly as possible,” the press release from TCSS said. “This is a good reminder that weapons of any kind or toys that look like weapons are not allowed on school grounds in the Troup County School System.

“Please encourage your student to report to a teacher or administration when they see or hear anything of concern. Thank you for your support in this matter.”

As a result of the incident, Ashton Williams, 17, was arrested and charged with carrying a weapon on school grounds and possession of a handgun by persons under 18. Williams has not yet been booked at the Troup County Jail.

LaGrange Police say the gun was found during an administrative search at the high school.

It’s unclear at this time if the gun was detected by the weapons detection systems in use at Troup High School. The LDN has asked for clarification on how the weapon was found.
