The Callaway girls basketball team had little trouble keeping its undefeated start to the 2023-24 season alive on Tuesday as they ran past McNair 74-16.

The Cavaliers’ defense suffocated and swarmed the Mustang offense. By the time McNair cracked double figures, the third quarter was nearly over.

The game was in little doubt long before the final buzzer with the fourth quarter being shortened to six minutes as well. This allowed head coach Deyano Martin to tinker with some lineups late.

The offense was all gas and no brakes for the Cavaliers. Callaway was able to put together an 18-5 lead after the first quarter and never looked back as the lead ballooned up to 34 points at the half.

The Leading scorer on the season for the Cavaliers is Lacey Thomas and she lived up to the billing on Tuesday with 18 points. It was a two-woman show for the Cavaliers with Thomas dominating the paint and Aniyah McFarland initiating the offense and controlling the perimeter. McFarland had 17 points with two made 3-pointers that kept the defense honest.

Keiyunna Maddox also kept the offense humming and finished with nine points. In total, 10 different players got in the scoring column for the Cavaliers as the rock was moving around the court all game.

The closest game of the season has been a 29-point victory over Valley (AL) last Saturday. The Cavaliers will be tested more in the coming weeks. Callaway (3-0)(2-0) will travel to take on region foe Landmark Christian on Friday.
