The Callaway girls basketball team bounced back nicely from their first loss of the season to topple Lanett 50-15 to get back in the win column on the second night of a back-to-back on Tuesday.

The calling card for the Cavaliers all season has been their defense and it was no different on Tuesday. The Callaway defense stifled anything the Panthers could get going on offense. This allowed Callaway to take a 14-4 lead after one and a 29-7 lead at the halftime break.

The Cavaliers never let up from there as their defense continued to dominate and their offense made enough plays to keep expanding their lead.

It was once again the Lacey Thomas show on offense as the senior finished with a game-high 24 points, outscoring the Panthers single-handedly in every quarter but the fourth when she had three points and the entire Lanett squad also had three points. The only slight knock of Thomas was the fact she connected on only four of her 11 free-throw attempts. It’s a small blemish for Thomas, who has been a force for the Cavaliers in all facets during the start to the season.

Thomas had some help from Raniya Mahone, who was second on the team with nine points. Jailyn Baker finished with five points — all in the first half.

Nakeriona Heard led the way for the Panthers’ offense, scoring five points. She had two of Lanett’s three made baskets in the game as offense was a struggle. The team never scored more than five points in a quarter on Tuesday.

Callaway (6-1) (4-0) will have a short Christmas break before returning to action on Dec. 28 against Upson-Lee.
