After a tough series of games, the Callaway boys basketball team got back to winning ways with a 74-46 blowout win over Lanett. The Cavaliers had come into the game having lost two in a row — both by single digits — but made short work of the Panthers in front of a packed Callaway gymnasium.

It was the DeShun Coleman show from start to finish as he scored 29 points on seven made 3-pointers. Coleman connected on at least one 3-pointer in each quarter as the Panther defense had no answers for his outside shooting ability.

The first quarter was a struggle for both offenses as defenses ruled the day early. Callaway was able to take a 13-6 lead after the first quarter, but there were warning signs of what was to come as the Cavaliers went on an 8-0 run to start the game.

Both offenses came out with more juice in the second quarter, but the Cavaliers’ offense reigned supreme. Callaway was able to take a 36-23 lead into the half. Just when it seemed like the Panthers had a little momentum in the second quarter, a flagrant foul by Lanett allowed the Cavaliers to take a 20-9 lead.

Torri Truitt was injured by the foul but eventually returned later in the first half, but all seven of his points came before his injury in the first half.

The Panthers’ defense offered little resistance in the second half as the Cavaliers ran away with the game.

Bryceton Sanders got in on the sharp-shooting from deep, connecting on four 3-pointers in route to a 14-point game. Tyrus Edwards also hit a couple of deep 3-pointers in the third quarter to finish with six points.

Nakia Bynum led the Panthers with 12 points in the game.

Callaway (2-4) (1-3) will play Harris County on Thursday before taking a week off from games for Christmas break.
