Troup High School’s Breanna Crawford was recently awarded 2nd place in the District High School Daughters of the American Revolution Essay competition. The fact that this is the second time she has placed in this contest makes this a special event.
Crawford entered the DAR contest while a 5th grader at West Point Elementary under the guidance of Mrs. Leigh Smith. The essay contest at that time was a diary entry from the viewpoint of a young girl analyzing the aftermath of World War I. Breanna received an Honorable Mention that year.
Fast forward five years later and Crawford’s Honors American Lit & Comp teacher, Mrs. Jana Arp, sent an email to all her students inviting them to participate in the essay contest for 2022. Crawford wrote her 800-word essay for the DAR contest theme of Patriots of the American Revolution on Mammy Kate, a slave who saved her master. Breanna took 2nd place for her essay and was presented a certificate by Ms. Sally Sue Bradley, DAR History Committee Member.
Crawford is a very busy Tiger, being a part of Troup County Youth Leadership at the Chamber of Commerce in LaGrange, running Track for Troup High School, and volunteering after school two days per week. She has plans to use her love of Geometry to become an Architectural Engineer.
