Lafayette Christian was able to just edge out Holy Ground 62-58 for an important region victory on Thursday.

The Cougars came out of the gates firing and were able to take a 19-13 lead after the first quarter, but were unable to sustain that momentum into the second quarter as Holy Ground cut the deficit to just three points going into halftime (29-26).

The second half went much the same way as the Cougars opened up a little breathing room in the third quarter before the Holy Ground made up the ground and closed the distance.

It was another big night for Bruno Tellez, who led the team in scoring with 32 points. He made the team pay from behind the 3-point line, in the paint and everywhere in between as Holy Ground struggled to contain him. His play down the stretch was the key reason that the Cougars held on.

Joshua Zapata also helped will the team to victory, scoring 14 points including 10 in the second half.

Vakiel Hammett chipped in with 11 points while David Karvelas finished with five as only four Cougars got in the scoring column on Thursday.

Lafayette Christian (8-4) (3-1) is now second in region play. The Cougars will travel to take on Praise Academy on Friday for a non-region matchup before a rematch on the road against Holy Ground on Monday.
