The Callaway girls basketball team is a freight train right now as they dominated McNair 76-41 on the road Friday to earn their ninth win in a row.

The Cavaliers came out of the gates hot, taking a 20-9 lead after the first quarter. The Callaway offense did not have the same energy in the second quarter as McNair was able to close the deficit to just six points (29-26) heading into halftime.

Whatever head coach Deyano Martin said at halftime had his Cavaliers fired up as they came out and outscored McNair 30-9 in the third quarter to take a commanding lead.

It started with Keiyunna Maddox, who was a menace on both ends of the floor. She scored 10 of her game-high 22 points in the third quarter. She also finished with five steals and five assists. Her command of the offense is one of the reasons the team is off to its best start in program history (14-1).

She was not alone in the offensive resurgence in the third quarter as Raniya Mahone scored nine of her 15 points in the quarter while Jailyn Baker had nine, including two made 3-pointers.

It was another typical performance from senior Laney Thomas as she had a double-double, finishing the game with 15 points and 12 rebounds while chipping in five steals and four assists.

Shakenya Wortham came off the bench and helped keep the offense steady with eight points, including two made 3-pointers.

After the dominant third quarter, the Cavaliers closed out the game with ease in the fourth quarter to improve to 14-1 overall and 8-0 in region play. The Cavaliers will travel to take on Lanett on Saturday.
