The Cavaliers had upset on their mind on Wednesday as they clinched a spot in the AA state playoffs. The six-seeded Callaway boys basketball team took it to the three-seeded Landmark War Eagles on the road in the opening round of the region 5-2A tournament, winning 67-56.

It has been an up-and-down season for the Cavaliers in the first year under head coach Kenny Coleman, but Wednesday served as a culmination of all the hard work the team has put in all season.

Unsurprisingly, it was Kenny’s son, senior DeShun Coleman, who put on an offensive clinic to seal the deal. After a quiet first half with just six points, the younger Coleman exploded in the third quarter, connecting on three 3-pointers. It was just an appetizer to what would come in the fourth quarter when he scored an additional nine points to close out the game with 24 points. 

The first half was as up-and-down as this season was for the Cavaliers. Callaway led 15-12 after one, but the offense slumped in the second and the Cavaliers trailed 25-21 heading into halftime. 

The second half was all Callaway with the Cavaliers outscoring the War Eagles 35-25 over the final 16. 

DeShun was not the only hero for the Cavaliers as Bryceton Sanders also came through in the clutch. Sanders had seven of his 13 points in the fourth quarter and connected on three 3-pointers in the game. 

Tryus Edwards finished with 11 points. 

Callaway will play ELCA on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at ELCA with a spot in the region tournament championship on the line.
