The Troup basketball team struggled on Friday against powerhouse Fayette County in the Region 4-4A championship game, falling 89-61 to finish as runner-up.

The first half did not go to plan for the hometown Tigers, falling behind 24-12 after the first quarter in front of the home crowd. The second quarter was no better as Troup went into the locker room at halftime trailing 46-24.

The Tigers had a fire lit under their tails coming out of the break, producing their best quarter in the third, outscoring Fayette County 27-21. Unfortunately, it was too little too late as it barely made a dent in Fayette County’s lead.

Troup’s offense could not match that energy in the fourth quarter and never got back into the game.

Gavyn Gates was the main source of offense for Troup, tallying 15 points. DeJaylen Campbell and Jalen Brown also scored in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Troup will be hosting a playoff game in the first round of the AAAA state playoffs as a two-seed.
