Oldies music fans get ready. The Sock Hops are returning to LaGrange on Saturday.

The Sock Hops will return to the Troup High Fine Arts Auditorium on Saturday for a concert to benefit the Troup High Alumni Association.

The group will return to THS to perform classic hits from the 50s, 60s and 70s. From The Four Seasons to The Four Tops, the group specializes in the four-part harmonies from the early days of rock & roll.

The concert is sponsored by the Troup High Alumni Association, which uses proceeds from the event to help support the school and its students and faculty.

Alumni Association President Tonya Meacham said the club sponsors a trio of $1,000 scholarships for worthy Troup High seniors.

Since 2017, the Troup High Alumni Association has awarded the Walter Earl Thompson Memorial Scholarship to two THS seniors.

The scholarship is named after former TCSO Sheriff’s Deputy and Troup graduate Walter “Big Earl” Thompson. His daughter, Jennifer Thompson was the inaugural recipient of the scholarship.

The third scholarship was introduced two years ago to honor current Troup County Commissioner and THS Alumni Association founder, Ellis Cadenhead.

The Ellis P. Cadenhead Citizenship Award Scholarship is given to a THS senior who exemplifies good citizenship.

Meacham said the alumni association also uses the funds to support students and faculty with specific needs.

“We as an alumni association, we exist, to do things for the students and to give them opportunities that might not otherwise happen,” Meacham said.

Meacham explained for example a student or group of students might win a competition at a state level and need funds to travel to a national competition.

“So we may help them with travel expenses, hotel expenses, whatever to get them to be able to continue in that competition,” she said.

“Everything we do is just for the betterment of the students and teachers. Any money that’s raised, we want to give that back to them,” Meacham said.

In addition to the scholarships, the alumni association also provides a barbecue luncheon for THS faculty during their annual Teacher Appreciation Week.

he Sock Hops have performed at the alumni association’s annual concert for several years. Meacham said it’s because of community demand.

“We have members of the community, and even surrounding communities, ask us to bring them back. They’re requested every year. They really have a following here in the area,” Meacham said.

The concert will be held at the Troup High Fine Arts Auditorium at 1920 Hamilton Road on Saturday, Feb. 24, starting at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $15 and are available at Troup High School, LaGrange Toyota, Landscape Supply of LaGrange and Weathers Honda.
