The Troup County Board of Commissioners has rescinded a recent appointment to the Troup County Elections Board after it was discovered that the appointee was ineligible for the seat.

County Attorney Jerry Willis said that Timothy Smith was appointed to the election board on Feb. 20, but it was later discovered that he did not meet the residency requirements of the appointment. Smith does not currently live within the boundaries of District 2, the seat he was appointed to.

Willis explained that election board members must live within their districts for at least a year before their appointment. Smith was found to not currently live within District 2.

Elections Board districts are the same as commissioner districts. Ellis Cadenhead, Commissioner for District 2, said he nominated Smith in error thinking he lived within the district.

Because of Smith’s ineligibility, the commissioners voted to rescind his appointment.

“This is no reflection on him at all, of course. This is simply the fact that we have learned that he does not meet the district residency requirements,” Willis said.

Willis noted that no oath has been taken for the seat, nor have papers been filed with the state.

The commissioners discussed the issue during an executive session on Tuesday morning. At the evening meeting, Cadenhead nominated Joseph Jones for the District 2 Election Board seat.

The nomination was unanimously approved.
