Callaway blasts rival Heard County for ninth win in a row

Callaway blasted rivals Heard County 12-2 on Monday for the team’s ninth straight win. It has been a torrid tear that the Cavaliers are on as they have won the last five games all by double figures. 

The Braves actually took the first lead of the game by scoring a run in the bottom of the first, but that lead would not last long. Callaway put five past Heard County in the top of the second to take a commanding lead.

Luke Taylor grounded into a fielder’s choice to drive in the opening run. Bryce Hubbard sent a double to left field to give Callaway its first lead of the game, 3-1. Brantin Swanson hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the fourth run of the inning. Julian Dukes singled to drive in the final run of the inning.

The Braves got their second run in the bottom of the third, but could not get much going late. 

Callaway eventually blew the game wide open with six runs in the top of the sixth inning. 

Taylor drove in his second and third runs of the game with a double to put Callaway up 7-2. Brantin was walked with the bases loaded to drive in the eighth run of the game for the Cavaliers. Slade Hunt scored on a passed ball followed by a Dukes sacrifice fly to make it 10-2. Brody Swanson drove in the final run of the inning with a single. 

The Cavaliers added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Brantin hit a sacrifice fly. 

Lashun Gates had a strong showing at the plate for Callaway, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Hunt also had a good day with the bat, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored. 

Taylor, Hubbard, Dukes, Brody and Blake Harrington all had a hit apiece. 

Brantin got the start on the mound, pitching 4 and ⅓ innings in which he allowed just five hits and one earned run on three strikeouts. Hunt and Harrington pitched the final two innings and change and picked up right where Brantin left off. 

After opening the season 0-2, Callaway i now 9-2 and 5-0 in region play. The Cavaliers will look to make it 10 wins in a row and stay undefeated in region play when they host McNair on Tuesday.
