The LaGrange Lions Club will host its annual golf tournament at Highland Country Club on July 27. This year’s event will benefit the Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Homes, which is a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to providing the state’s most at-risk children the love, safety and stability needed to become mature, successful adults.

The first Georgia Sheriff Youth Home was opened in 1960, and focuses on teaching at-risk children how to overcome adversity, teamwork and accepting authority, personal responsibility as well as hygiene and manners.

“Every year we pick a different charity to spotlight,” Lions Club Vice President Murray Schine said on July 3. “A few years ago we did Troup Cares, last year it was the Salvation Army, This year it is the Sherriffs’ Youth Home.”

The annual golf tournament is one of the two yearly charities the Lions Club puts on, the other being a yearly barbecue in November on Election Day. This year the Lions Club also volunteered at the NSCA US Open at Big Red Oak Plantation.

The Lions Club will cover its expenses from the day, then has committed to giving a sizeable portion of the remaining funds to the Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Homes.

“The way we do it is we make a commitment that we will give them, after we cover our expenses, we will give them the first $3,500 of anything we make over that,” Schine said.

“Then we take the rest and give them half of everything else.”

Registration for the golf tournament begins at 9 am on July 27 and breakfast will be provided before a shotgun start at 10. The tournament format will be four-person teams, captain’s choice, with handicap adjustment to team score.

Male players 65 and over may play from the senior tees while ladies may play from the forward tees.
