HOGANSVILLE – The results are in.

Callaway High’s annual ironman competition was held last month, and after all of the events were completed, the results were tabulated and a winner was announced.

The top finisher was sophomore Cartavious Bigsby, who goes by the nickname Tank.

Bigsby finished a few points ahead of another sophomore, Jacob Freeman.

The top 10 finishers were treated by head coach Pete Wiggins to dinner at Jim Bob’s.

Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins said the ironman competition is an important part of what the team does.

“Ironman’s a tradition, and they know what guys who have gone before them have done,” Wiggins said. “They go out and try to compete with themselves and their teammates. They’re competing against guys from the past. That’s a big deal here.”

Finishing tied for third behind Bigsby and Freeman were two seniors, Travis Traylor and DJ Atkins.

Traylor won the ironman competition in 2016.

DQ Wilkerson and Gabe Moultrie tied for fifth, Jonathan Leonard was seventh, Kobe Jackson was eighth, and Lichon Terrell and Qua Hines were tied for ninth.

Bigsby, the ironman winner, is part of a talented group of sophomores.

Bigsby will start at outside linebacker, and he’ll also play some at running back behind Atkins.

Bigsby is one of the many Callaway players with college offers.

Among the schools that Bigsby has received offers from are Alabama, Oregon, and the University of Southern California.

Callaway will hold its first full-contact practice this afternoon as it prepares for the season opener on Aug. 18 against LaGrange.

Callaway has a preseason game against Northside-Columbus on Aug. 11 in Hogansville.

TROUP: The Tigers are in the midst of their team camp.

The camp kicked off on Sunday, with the players participating in a “lift-a-thon,” and it will run through Tuesday when the team holds its first full-contact practice.

The players are spending two nights at the school.

At the “lift-a-thon,” the players went through their normal weight-lifting routine, with their family members there to watch in the Troup High gym.

Glisson also introduced each of the players to the crowd.

Troup, which is in the midst of its second full week of practice, will open its season on Aug. 17 against visiting Hardaway.

Troup has a preseason game against Harris County on Aug. 11 at Callaway Stadium.

LAGRANGE: As the Grangers deal with the tragic death of teammate Nar’Quevious Tucker, they are just a few days away from taking the field against another team.

LaGrange will be at Heard County on Friday for a preseason game, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.

After that, LaGrange will have two weeks before it opens the season on Aug. 18 against Callaway.
