The Callaway Lady Cavaliers fell to 1-3 in Region 5-AA with a 10-1 home loss to Bremen on Thursday.

Callaway (9-5 overall) is in fourth place in the region, and that’s critical this year since only the top four teams will qualify for the region tournament.

Those four teams will advance to the state playoffs, no matter what happens in the region tournament.

The teams that finish fifth or lower will be done at the conclusion of the regular season.

Callaway got a critical region win over Temple earlier in the week, and it was hoping to carry that momentum over to Thursday’s game.

Instead, it was Bremen taking control early with two runs in the first inning, and it didn’t look back in a game that ended after five innings because of the run rule.

“We’re all frustrated,” Callaway head coach Robyn McCann said. “They’re better than this. We all know what they’re capable of doing.”

Callaway resumes its region schedule with a key game at Jordan on Sept. 5. Jordan is one of the teams vying for the fourth spot in the region tournament.

“We have to be in that top four, so we’ve put the pressure on them,” McCann said. “Every game is major.”

In Thursday’s game, Faith Horton had two hits for Callaway, leadoff hitter Leijorey Sanders had a double, Chaple Butler and Alora Vetsavong each had a hit, and Lindsay Cofield reached on an error and scored a run in the fourth inning.
