It’s a Thursday-night test for the Callaway Cavaliers, who will take on the unbeaten Lamar County Trojans at Callaway Stadium.

Callaway and Lamar County are both 2-0 in Region 5-AA, so something will have to give.

“They’re 6-0, so they’ll bring a lot of energy to Thursday night’s game,” Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins said. “It’ll be a tough opponent.”

Lamar County has won two close games to open its region schedule.

After winning 28-16 at Jordan, Lamar County used a strong defensive effort to beat visiting Spencer 14-7 last week.

Lamar County gets it done with a balanced offense, led by quarterback Devin Bateman, who is a two-way threat.

Bateman has completed 26-of-43 passes for 490 yards with five touchdowns and just one interception, and the sophomore quarterterback has also run for 102 yards with four touchdowns.

Kenterius Brownlee has 543 rushing yards on 54 carries, good for an average of 10.1 yards per attempt, and he has four touchdowns.

Lamar County has been strong defensively as well, giving just 10 points per game.

Callaway began its region schedule with a 34-6 win over Temple before outlasting Bremen 20-14 last week.

Jymere Jones had two long touchdown catches from Demetrius Coleman as well as a 90-yard scoring pass to Jacob Freeman.

Callaway’s defense held Bremen to seven points, with the other touchdown coming on a fumble return.

It was a big win for the Cavaliers as they look to win a region championship, but there is still plenty of work to do, beginning with Thursday’s game.

“We just have to take care of business one week at a time,” Wiggins said.
