There’s no age requirement to make our community a better place to live, a point driven home by three 10-year-old Hollis Hand Elementary students.

Students Addyson Yerkes, Audrey Hill and Autumn Patterson recently started making bracelets for sick children, an idea they came up with on their own.  They showed initiative, ambition and most importantly compassion when they decided they wanted to help people through their bracelet-making hobby. 

The three girls created Strings and Things and recently donated 100 bracelets to be placed in the welcome kits for sick children staying at Piedmont Columbus Hospital.

The girls even went as far as visiting patients in pediatric care and making bracelets with them. 

At a young age, these 10-year-olds are learning and understanding empathy, compassion and what it means to give back. Some adults can learn from them.  

“We want to help make the world a better place,” Yerkes said. 

Recently, the group presented a $75 check to Piedmont Columbus Hospital to supply the kids with items such as treats, birthday cakes, toys and more. Addyson was able to raise the funds by selling and making bracelets at Oakhurst Farms pumpkin patch.

They could have spent that money on anything. Instead, they gave it to help make the world just a tad bit better for children going through a difficult time. 

We could all learn to take a page out of their book to make the world better in our own way.
