If familiarity breeds success as the saying goes, then the Lafayette Christian School volleyball team may do some special things this season.

Most of the team members have been playing together for years, and that includes the four seniors who have been teammates since middle school

On Tuesday afternoon, Lafayette Christian School continued its season with a dominant performance against visiting Arlington School, winning the match in straight sets by scores of 25-7, 25-9 and 25-15.

“We have everybody returning from last year, with one new girl,” said Lafayette Christian head coach Katie Firth. “It’s a small team, but we’ve got four seniors. They’re all returning, so they’ve all been here, and they all know each other and have played together, some of them, through middle school.”

One of those seniors, Savanna Bryant, is happy to be with her teammates after some months of uncertainty because of Covid-19.

“To be back on the court, and to be able to play your senior year, it feels good,” Bryant said. “We didn’t get to practice that much, so once we got to start practice it was fun, and getting back on the court, you enjoy it while you can.”

The other seniors are Estela Llorens, Rachel Anderson and Emilie Ward, and they’re joined by fellow varsity players Katie Killmer, Caraline Jackson and Hana Stevens.

“It’s more like a friendship,” Bryant said, describing the relationship she and her teammates have. “We’ve always played together. We know how each other plays. We believe in each other, and we just play ball.”

Arlington School was unable to keep pace with home-standing Lafayette Christian.

The Cougars jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first set, and they never let up and won 25-7.

The story was much the same in the second set, with Lafayette Christian seizing a big early lead on the way to a 25-9 win.

Arlington Christian kept things more competitive in the third set.

Lafayette Christian was clinging to a 7-6 lead when it took control, and it earned a 25-15 victory to secure the victory.

It was the fourth match of the season for the Cougars (2-2), and Firth is grateful for every moment the players get together.

“They’re so glad to have a season, and I’m really happy for them,” Firth said.

The hope now is that the season will be a memorable one, and so far at least, Firth likes what she’s seen.

“We’re running a 5-1 offense this year, and that’s a new thing for us, but they’re doing well,” Firth said. “They’ve really gelled together, and they’re really played well together, so that’s good.”
