It was a milestone win for Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins.

Tuesday’s 22-17 victory over Fitzgerald not only gave Callaway the Class AA state championship, but it was Wiggins’ 150th win as a head coach.

Wiggins, who took over the Callaway football program in 2005, has a 150-48 career record.

Wiggins had previously led four teams to the state semifinals, and this was the team that broke through and captured the program’s first championship.

“It’s been a long time coming for him, and for it to be my senior year, and for us to win it for him, it just means so much more,” said defensive lineman Caden Prather.

After the game, Wiggins wasn’t focused on himself, rather he praised the performance of the players, while also expressing his appreciation for his assistant coaches.

Among those coaches is Dusty Hubbard, who has been Callaway’s defensive coordinator since 2005.

“Our coaching staff, what a great group of men, and their work ethic and their dedication to the boys on this team, and their dedication to our school, makes our program better,” Wiggins said. “I’m really fortunate to be in the mix with that group of guys.”

It is, Wiggins stressed, a team effort, and that extends beyond the players and coaches.

“There has been so much work from former players, from faculty and administration, from mommas and daddies, from people in the community, from people doing pre and post-game meals to help build the tradition, and just the level of our football team and how we operate,” Wiggins said. “I want to say thank you to all those folks.”
