It was getting out of hand and it looked like the Troup Lady Tigers could be headed for a blowout loss on their home floor, but they hung tough.

While East Coweta held on for the 62-52 win, Troup head coach Carla Thornton was proud of the fight her players showed on their home court.

“They were trying to embarrass us, but for us to only lose by 10, I’m really proud of them for that,” Thornton said. “Hats off to them. I couldn’t be more proud of them. I might even give them a day off.”

The Lady Tigers came into the game short-handed with three key players unavailable, including leading scorer Aniya Palmer and starter Samarria Weldon.

East Coweta, taking advantage of Troup’s issues, surged to an 18-11 lead after the first quarter, and it was ahead 35-20 at the half.

The Lady Tigers found their footing in the second half and outscored the Lady Indians 32-27, and they enjoyed a 15-9 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter.

With two starters out of action, Troup’s lineup looked different than it usually does, but Thornton said no matter who is on the floor “we have the same expectations. We coach all of you, just like we coach them. Once we got comfortable in our roles, and some other people stepped up tonight.”

Two of Troup’s senior leaders, Jada Green and Darnesheyuna McCollough, led the way with 17 points apiece, and Alexcia Murphy added nine points.

Troup (4-4) will return to action on Jan. 15 when it begins Region 2-AAAA play with a home game against Hardaway.
