For the first time in more than a month, the Troup Tigers ended up on the wrong end of the scoreboard.

Troup, playing short-handed with five players unavailable, fell to a strong East Coweta team 77-55 on Wednesday night.

Troup (5-3) had won five consecutive games before meeting its match in East Coweta.

“They fought, and they played their tails off,” said Troup head coach Blake Craft. “We had some freshmen, and some sophomores, and they got varsity experience. The effort was there. I love that.”

Sophomore Jaylen Young led the Tigers in scoring with 12 points, while freshman Deo’vion Tucker added 10 points.

Senior KJ Tucker, Troup’s leading scorer this season, added nine points, Tre Scott chipped in with seven points, and NiQuan Philpot scored five points.

“Some guys had to get out of their comfort zone, and that’s part of it,” Craft said. “For the most part, we stayed very positive.”

East Coweta (7-5), which has won two straight games after losing four in a row, led 40-26 at the half, and it was able to pull away in the second half.

“You’ve got to give East Coweta credit. They’re tough,” Craft said. “They’ve played extremely tough teams.”

Troup will look to get back on the winning track when it visits Langston Hughes on Saturday, and it begins Region 2-AAAA play next week against Hardaway.
