BREMEN – In the first of three games this week between the Region 5-AA rivals, Bremen outlasted Callaway 7-6 on Tuesday evening.

The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday at Callaway, with the first game set to begin at 4:30 p.m.

In Tuesday’s game, the Cavaliers were trailing 7-5 when they scored a single run in the sixth inning to get within one, but they were unable to pull even.

Callaway (11-5 overall) fell to 3-2 in region play, while Bremen (9-5 overall) improved to 4-0 in the region.

Tucker Starling had a double and an RBI for Callaway, Andrew Locke had two hits, Justin Moore, CJ Stephens and Bryce Hubbard each had a hit, Kaden Rogers had two RBIs, and Jacob Miles had one RBI.

On the mound, Starling started and pitched five innings, and Garrett Huckleberry and Brantin Swanson combined for one scoreless innings.

Callaway jumped on top with two runs in the top of the first inning.

Starling was hit by a pitch, Locke singled, and Moore reached on a walk to load the bases before Rogers and Miles were hit by pitches on back-to-back at-bats to drive in two runs the hard way.

The Blue Devils answered with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, and they scored two more runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead.

Callaway tied it with three runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Eli Freeman reached on an error leading off, Starling walked, and Locke’s base hit loaded the bases.

Next up was Moore, and his bunt single drove in a run, and a sacrifice fly by Rogers cut Bremen’s lead to 5-4.

With two outs, Locke stole third, and he came in to score on error, and the score was deadlocked.

Bremen answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to reclaim the lead.

Callaway got one of those runs back in the sixth inning.

Hubbard reached on a one-out single, and two batters later, Starling’s RBI double got the Cavaliers within a run.

In the seventh inning, Miles reached on a two-out error, but a groundout ended that threat, and the game.
