LaGrange beats Northgate in season opener

The LaGrange boys basketball season started out with a bang on Tuesday as the team topped Northgate 58-49 in front of a packed gymnasium at LaGrange High.

Torian Reeves led the Grangers to victory with his 17 points. He set the standard early, scoring seven points in the first quarter. His ability to hit the deep ball (two made 3-pointers) as well as his ability to rattle the rim and throw down a dunk made him tough to handle for the Vikings.

Reeves is just one of many Grangers who will have to step up this season. BJ Wortham is the only returning player who has any major experience in varsity action, and he was unavailable Tuesday night.

The Grangers jumped out to a 20-5 lead early and never looked back despite the Vikings cutting the LaGrange lead to as few as five points in the fourth quarter.

The young Granger squad held on in the end.

J’un Hall was second on the Grangers in scoring with 11 points, 10 of those coming in the second half including six on a pair of huge 3-pointers that helped swing momentum back in LaGrange’s favor.

Zai Peagler had a quietly good game with 10 points and Jamarcus Pope finished with eight, including two 3-pointers.

LaGrange (1-0) will return to the floor on Nov. 29 on the road to Elite Scholars Academy.
