Anointed by Faith Ministries is holding its sixth annual Back 2 School event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.
At the event, the church will give out backpacks, school supplies and clothes for free, along with giving free haircuts and hair braids.
Head usher Renae Williams said the church holds the event to help struggling families.
“We try to get them school supplies before they go back,” Williams said. “We love doing it.”
The event will also have bounce houses and free food, such as popcorn, frozen treats and barbeque.
The event partners with the LaGrange police and fire departments and the county sheriff’s office. Williams said the fire department will have one of its trucks on display and firefighters will hand out safety pamphlets to parents.
“The departments give out information on safety to the parents and kids,” she said.
The event will also have professional hair braiders and stylists on hand so children will have fresh haircuts when they return to school, Williams said.
“The parents won’t have to worry about getting their children’s hair cut,” she said.
“My husband is one of the barbers.”
Free clothes will be available for families to take at the event.
“The clothes are donated from the community,” she said.
Williams said even local companies are helping out with the event.
“Beauty Supply has donated brand new shoes, combs and barrettes,” Williams said.
The event will also have live music performed by Gospel groups and dances by the church’s own praise dancers.
“We’re going to have gospel music performances and our own praise dancers,” she said.
The church puts on the event every year because they want to help the families in the community.
“We want to give back to people who can’t buy these supplies for their kids,” Williams said.
Williams said the church wants to expand the event with other parishes in LaGrange. So far, Faith Temple Church of Deliverance is also contributing. “This is an overall church event,” she said. “Our pastor is trying to get other churches to join us.”
The back to school event will be held at 129 Sunset Street in LaGrange.
