City Council considers giving alley to homeowners

On Tuesday, the LaGrange City Council discussed abandoning an alley between Broome and Margarite Street.
The city plans to hold a public hearing to discuss abandoning a thin piece of city property that stretches from Broom Street to Margarite Street on Oct 10. Officials noted that while what appear to be driveways exist near the ends of the property, it has not been used for any purpose for years.
“That alley is basically an unimproved area,” City Manager Meg Kelsey said. “There is actually a tree that is sitting in the center of the alley right now.”
At least two of the owners of property adjacent to the alley have expressed interest in obtaining use of the land. Since the narrow strip of property is not in use the city council seemed to favor letting the property be absorbed into the adjacent properties on that block.
“Basically, we would cut that alley in half, and they would be able to have their attorneys prepare a quick claim deed entitling them to that property,” Kelsey said.
Mayor Jim Thornton asked that property owners on that block be informed of the action by letter.
