The LaGrange Police Department’s K9 unit was recognized Thursday by K9’s of West Georgia. Representative Tammie Cook presented Officer Wendy Bryant with K9 Chico’s retirement certificate and Sgt. Clayton Bryant with K9 Rik’s end of watch plaque.

“We always showcase during our annual report our K9 unit,” said LPD Chief Lou Dekmar.

Chico is an 11-years-old K9. Rik, a 9-year-old Belgian Malinois retired and was diagnosed with cancer in February. He passed away a few days after retiring.

“We’re pretty proud of the fact that they respond to 4,000 or 5,000 calls a year,” Dekmar said. “They’re involved in 500 to 600 hundred apprehensions a year in addition. They do tracking and drug work, and also provide the opportunity for safe inspection of homes and buildings so that the officers aren’t unnecessarily jeopardized.”

Cook also presented Dekmar with a paw print statue.

“This is in recognition of all of your K9s past, present and future,” Cook said. “It’s for [the LPD] to present wherever you want within the department so that everyone has a chance to see it. I wanted to make sure your team got this and was recognized and know that they are appreciated for everything that they do out there.”

Chico will spend his retirement with the Bryants.

“We certainly appreciate it, and appreciate the fact that [the K9’s of West Georgia] would take time to share your sentiments with us, so thank you,” Dekmar said.
