The LaGrange Police Department is reminding people about bicycle safety on roadways following a fatal collision last week. Howard Graves, 61, was riding his bicycle in the middle of the road when he was struck by a pickup truck at the 500 block of Daniel Street.
The accident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on April 4, according to the crash report.
Graves was unresponsive upon an officer’s arrival and was airlifted to a Columbus area hospital. Graves had serious injuries to the legs, pelvis, back, chest and head, according to the report.
LPD Lt. Mark Kostial said the man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Graves did not use the specified bike lane on Daniel Street, according to Kostial.
The truck’s driver is not at fault for the crash, but charges are pending for DUI, according to the report.
The driver had an alcoholic odor coming from his breath. The LPD is waiting for toxicological results for the driver to come from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, according to Kostial.
According to the LPD, Georgia law states bicycles ridden at night must have a white light visible from 300 feet at the front and a red light at the back that is visible from 300 feet.
