Twenty cats and 28 dogs were taken from a house Monday on the 100 block of Whaley Street in Hogansville. The Hogansville Police Department was given an anonymous tip about the residence, and the owner willingly surrendered the animals, according to HPD Sgt. Jeff Sheppard.

The resident’s house was unsanitary because of the number of animals, but was not deplorable, according to Sheppard.

“There was a lot of ammonia in the house because of the cats,” Sheppard said.

Two pit bulls and four chihuahuas were taken to the vet for skin mites.

“All the animals in the house were relatively healthy,” Sheppard said. “There was no sign of animal cruelty. The owner just appeared to be overwhelmed with the number of animals.”

The owner was charged with improper animal care, according to Sheppard.

Officers from the Troup County Marshals and LaGrange Animal Shelter assisted with taking the animals.
