Young leaders experience leadership lesson at LaGrange City Council meeting

The Communities in Schools Emerging Leaders group from Troup County experienced government leadership first hand Tuesday.
This group of nine students are a part of the newly formed Emerging Leaders group, students who have proven themselves to be positive role models for the community, school and their peers, according to a City of LaGrange press release.
The students are from Gardner Newman Middle School, Long Cane Middle School and Callaway Middle School.
City Manager Meg Kelsey talked to the group about the responsibilities of city government and led an exercise on the importance of being a good citizen.
The group then attended the LaGrange City Council’s regular work session and addressed the mayor and city council by introducing themselves.
“Today’s visit was extremely important because we must introduce our students and rising leaders to their community and educate our students on who their elected officials are, what their roles are, how they became an elected official and even how our students can become an elected official one day,” said CIS Site Coordinator for CMS Stephanie Williams.
“We have to let our youth know this is their community, they are our future and one day they can sit in the same seat as Mayor Thornton. These things truly are possible.”
Communities In Schools of Georgia in Troup County is part of the nation’s largest stay in school network. The mission of CIS Troup County is to surround students with a community of support, empower them to stay in school and achieve in life. CIS Troup County has developed both girls and boys mentoring programs at all three local middle schools (LCMS’s Distinguished Gentlemen; CMS’s Men of Distinction and Ladies of Royalty; GNMS’s Men of Distinction).
During the next few months the Emerging Leaders group will have meetings once a month led by local business leaders, entrepreneurs and stakeholders in the community focusing on integrity, commitment, accountability and respect.
