Horace W. Thomas, Sr.

1925-2020

Horace W. Thomas Sr., of LaGrange, passed away at the blessed age of 95, on Oct. 12, 2020 at Hospice LaGrange.  He was born on July 12, 1925, to the late Ezra Alexander Thomas and Thelma Folds Thomas Brand.

  In addition to his parents, Mr. Thomas is preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Lillian Oneida “Nita” Thomas; his son, James “Jamie” Eugene Thomas; and his siblings, Helen Thomas, James Thomas, and Merlin “Buck” Thomas. 

Mr. Thomas proudly served our country in the United States Army serving in WWII. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He retired from Hawkins Oil Co. after more than 40 years. 

He loved attending his home church, Sonrise Baptist (formerly, Mt. Calvary Baptist) where he was a longtime member. He enjoyed spending time at the Active Life Senior center where he often won prizes playing games with other seniors. 

Mr. Horace W. Thomas Sr. is survived by his sons, Horace W. Thomas Jr. (Deborah) and Vestal W. Thomas (Martha); his daughter, LeeAnn Mullis (Jarod); his siblings, Nellie Meadows, Harold “Pete” Thomas (Shirley), and Argle Thomas (Debra); his grandchildren, Kyle, Brian (Jessica), Jeremy, Alyssa, Callie, Caleb, Lily, Mackenzie, and Lorrie; his great grandchildren, Braxton, Jackson, Megan, and Julia; his great-great grandchild, Adriel; and many other family and friends.

The celebration of life service will be held at Sonrise Baptist Church in LaGrange on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2020 at 2 p.m. 

 The family will receive friends at the church from noon until service time on Saturday.  The committal service will directly follow the funeral and will be held at Restlawn Memory Gardens in LaGrange. Higgins Funeral Home at Hunter Allen Myhand, (706) 884-5626.
