LaGrange to shut down for trash pickup

The City of LaGrange plans to shut down business for a second year on Friday, April 26 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and all non-essential employees will go out into the community’s main thoroughfares to pick up litter.

City Manager Meg Kelsey began this litter cleanup campaign in April 2018, hoping to send a message to the community that the City of LaGrange is serious about picking up litter in the community.

The April 2018 event was so well-received with employees and citizens, as well as elected officials, LaGrange began hosting monthly cleanups throughout the city.

“It has been an eye-opening experience for me to participate in these clean-up events,” Kelsey said. “Getting out into the community, working side by side with employees and residents and beautifying the community has been a very rewarding experience. We hope that everyone will consider joining us by adopting a spot.

Dedicating even an hour or two is extremely helpful in not only cleaning up the environment, but also communicating the importance of being litter-free.”

On Friday, April 26, area businesses and the community are invited to join city employees in the litter pick-up event. After cleaning up the community, there will be lunch served on Lafayette Square in downtown LaGrange.

LaGrange Mayor Jim Thornton, Troup County Commission Chairman Patrick Crews, West Point Mayor Steve Tramell, Hogansville Mayor Bill Stankiewicz, along with Keep Troup Beautiful began discussions in early 2018 about addressing litter in the community and decided to focus on education efforts.

Kelsey wanted to send a message to the community that the City of LaGrange is serious about cleaning up litter and rolled out the city’s campaign, “Leaving LaGrange Better Than We Found It.”

The city will open back up for business at 1 p.m on April 26, while police and fire services will remain open all day.
