Deedee Godwin Williams is a candidate for West Point City Council.

Williams said her involvement in the community and her council experience have heightened her awareness of needs in the community and it has prompted her to think of changes which could transform West Point to a destination which will attract individuals, families and businesses to the area.

She said she would like to promote a culture of transparency and one which embraces the ideals of “access to every opportunity for every citizen.”

Her platform includes education, community development (specifically residential and recreational), workforce development (training for the jobs of today) and economic development with emphasis on retail options. Additionally, her goals will include eradicating poverty and providing services to our growing senior population.

She was born and raised in West Point, graduated from West Point High School and holds degrees in mathematics and business from LaGrange College. She is married to Calvin Williams Sr., and they have two children, C. J. and Kristen, and three grandchildren: Tre, Lizzie and Lillian.

Williams’ community involvement includes West Point City Council, West Point Development Authority, West Point Business Council (founding Co-chair), LaGrange College Board of Trustees, LaGrange/Troup Chamber of Commerce (2019 Diplomat of the Year), LaGrange Symphony Orchestra Board, Troup County CASA Board, Troup CARES Board and Troup Racial Trustbuilding Board. She is a member of Links, Inc. and Keeney UMC.

Her business career spans 30-plus years, and includes leadership roles in Fortune 500 Corporations such as Duracell, TSYS and Hyundai Transys Seating Systems Georgia as well as a stint with the State of Georgia. She said her experience, education and community leadership have prepared her for the challenges facing the city of West Point.
